Orchids are growing in popularity, most especially among the housewives. They are becoming one of the favored houseplant varieties. Who wouldn’t be charmed to its colorful petals and its many sizes and species? They may appear delicate, but the truth is orchids are pretty sturdy plants. In fact, they are resistant to loss of moisture and heat. And with the amount of information on orchids nowadays, growing them has never been easier. However, they do require some very specific amounts of vital resources so that they bloom at their highest potential. Some orchids require specific amounts of light, water and air that match their natural growing environments. Then there are some that thrive inside the average home temperature of between 75 to 85 degrees. Growing orchids is best done when they are planted in barks instead of in potting soil. Another great medium for growing orchids is the sphagnum moss. This is because the roots of the orchids need constant circulation of air. If the roots of your orchid plant are buried in soil, it is most likely that it will not bloom often or it could not even survive. Watering on the other hand depends on the specie of the orchid and the time of the year. There are some species of orchids that require watering once a week only, others more often than that. If its summer also, there are some orchid species that may require more water than during spring time.

Gauging how much light a specie of orchid needs is also important. Without light the orchid will not have enough stored energy to bloom. But with too much light, it will wilt and die. Yellowing leaves will also occur if there too much light. Trying to find out the perfect amount of light, water and air for your orchid could be very hard at first and it is usually the tricky part when it comes to growing orchids. But to compensate the inadequacy, you can use fertilizers. You should use fertilizers on the orchid plants sparingly though; it should not be used more than once a week.

Growing orchids is a very exciting and challenging hobby. It also needs a lot of patience from the grower. But the patience of the grower will always be rewarded when the orchid blooms.
